The hypermedia encyclopedia on the world’s people and their cultures offers exclusive access to the rich audiovisual content on the PCW Portal. It is composed of:

• A library of knowledge topics, which are helpful for systematically discovering a given field of knowledge via a few “broad questions” and the “main issues” facing research, but also teaching. Each subject is covered by a relatively rich corpus of audiovisual segments from various sources.


• A video-glossary including thousands of “keywords” (names of peoples, locations, historical periods, events, monuments, artifacts, tools, etc.). These “keywords” (often explanatory mini-phrases) are organized thematically into some fifteen sections. Each “keyword” is covered by a small audiovisual corpus including one or more segments of interviews with specialists and researchers, classes and conferences, various recordings of practices and activities, scenes from daily life, and artistic performances/exhibitions, etc.


• An « Author Encyclopedia » section where users can learn more about the community of researchers, teachers, field actors, specialists and experts having contributed to the People and Cultures of the World Encyclopedia.


• And, a « Production Team » section where users can learn more about the FMSH’s R&D team, ESCoM (Cognitive Semiotics and New Medias Team), who is in charge of managing the encyclopedia.
